The whole endeavor is volunteer and community based in nature, and grassroots in its approach, goals, and methodology. Having visited the school personally a handful of times in recent weeks to plan this work, it has become apparent how–and despite a facility that is in great need of huge upgrades and updates– these devoted coaches, teachers, and administrators work hard every day to reach and positively affect the students of Brainerd High. Their devotion and need is on clear display in the short, above video.

Over the next two weeks, and in partnership with Waldrep Construction and many others, New Blue is specifically trying to paint, repair, construct for, and generally improve the athletic wing of the building. On a nuts and bolts level our carpenters and painters will be painting, building lockers, cleaning, building storage, making repairs, and generally trying to make the most impact we can in a short amount of time on various projects in the athletic wing, and while other volunteers and contractors will work in other parts of the building. All of our labor for the project is donated, and we expect most of the entire New Blue crew to participate in the project. We begin work on Monday.

Some of our partners have begun to step forward with donated materials, lumber, and reduced-price goods, but the larger goals of the project may not be realized without additional funding.

With about $10,000 raised we can: Complete most of the painting, repair, and remodeling we have planned and proposed for the locker rooms, weight room, and athletic training areas of the building.

With about $20,000 raised we can: Buy and install a new gym floor for the weight room and other areas. Begin to purchase new equipment for the weight room you’ll see in the video.

With about $30,000 raised we can: Complete a substantial upgrade to all weight equipment and beyond. Additional monies can be used in other parts of the building for other repairs and projects too numerous to name.

Because the Brainerd Together website does not have a ready link for donations, New Blue has set up a GoFundMe page, listed below to simply facilitate donations. 2.9% of each donation does go to the page and fees. We can also handle checks if that is your preferred method. Volunteers are welcome the week of 6/17 for anyone interested in sweat equity.

Please consider donating any amount between $50 and $1500. I think we can pull together and make a big impact in the lives of these student athletes and coaches, as well as the balance of the student body at Brainerd.

July 3rd Update: The funds raised through gofundme have been deposited directly into the Brainerd account. In total with direct donations and gofundme, we have raised almost $10,000. Thank you all so very much. We greatly appreciate all your generosity in being able to help out a organization in need. With the money that has been raised, we have been able to build 26 new lockers for the football team, 14 new lockers for the boys basketball team, 16 new lockers for the girls basketball team, repaint the weight room, football locker room, men’s basketball locker room, and women’s basketball locker room. We have also been able to purchase new rubber flooring for the weight room and replace some of the old weight lifting equipment with new.

New Blue is Staying productive during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

New Blue Construction is dedicated to the health and safety of our employees and clients, their families, and also our community at large.

As we continue to build and renovate our existing projects during the Covid-19 Pandemic, we feel it is important to share that we are doing our part following guidelines set forth by the CDC, WHO and OSHA regarding essential businesses and practices.

Hand washing stations have been supplied to all projects, along with respectable social distancing guidelines whenever possible. Adequate personal protection equipment and regular thermometer checks will help to identify employees and associates who may be ill. Our strict guidelines mandate that sick employees will be given the necessary time away from work to properly limit exposure.

We strive to continue to do our part in this challenging time, and hope we can work together to limit the damage being caused by this world, country and local issue.

New Blue’s Custom Home Build in Middle Valley.

A brief introduction of New Blue’s latest new construction, located 20 minutes outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee in the Middle Valley area. Custom home has plans provided by H&K Architects, located in Chattanooga. The project includes a 3,300 Sq. Ft. home with lots of emphasis on outdoor space.

This homesite offers a set back country feel on the edge of the city, with rolling hills, nearby pastures and valley forests.

Project Managers at New Blue Construction work to guide their assigned projects through the construction process, with the goal of completing projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality. As the primary contact for clients, architects, designers, and the trades, Project Managers develop and maintain the important relationships that are key to ensuring the continued success of the company. Project Managers report directly to the Production Manager and the company President.

Job Description:

A Project Manager at New Blue Construction manages the day to day operations of their assigned projects. They are required to have a complete understanding of all aspects of the project scope and specifications, and will be held accountable for meeting the budget, schedule, and work quality standards.

Project Manager Minimum Qualifications:

– Minimum 7-10 years experience in residential construction
– Preferred 3+ years of experience in commercial construction
– Minimum 5 years experience in supervisory role
– A demonstrated understanding of construction best practice methods and codes
– Strong communication skills, both spoken and written.
– Proficient with current technology; ie smart phones, computers, email, Word, Excel, etc.

Core responsibilities/requirements/duties:

– Clear understanding of the work scope, drawings, and contract budget.
– Manage and coordinate the day to day field work to ensure it is constructed in an orderly and deliberate manner consistent with the client agreement.
– Communicate and partner with New Blue management, foremen, leads, and field crew to ensure best practice work methods, safety, and productivity.
– Manage and look ahead to proactively identify issues that could lead to problems or delays and actively facilitate solutions to these issues.
– Obtain all inspections and ensure the quality of work is maintained.
– Ensure all work described in the contractual work scope is completed.
– Maintain daily paperwork and correspondence.
– Create and/or sign off on the project schedule prior to the project start.
– Work to meet or beat schedules, and aim for zero-item punchlists.
– Submit all schedules for Production Manager approval.
– Communicate with clients at least once a week, in writing.
– Interact directly with architects and designers, to ensure that client expectations are clear across all parties.
– Manage the budget and job costs while maintaining a professional relationship with vendors, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients.
– Record and share meeting notes for all pertinent meetings.
– Verify all work is performed to New Blue standards.
– Maintain a clean and safe jobsite. Coordinate safety meetings and protocol with Safety Manager.
– Identify, price, and coordinate all change orders per New Blue policy.

All field personnel report directly to the PM that is managing the project they are assigned to. All PM’s report directly to the Production Manager.

New Blue is in the beginning phases of an addition and renovation in the historic Hill City area of North Chattanooga, Tennessee. This is not uncommon for New Blue; we consider ourselves experts at renovating older homes and matching period trim, carpentry and build styles.

In my research of this home that dates back to 1905, I came across numerous search results that indicated that this home was designed by Chattanooga renowned architect W.H. Sears. The name was new to me, but I presumed there must be some importance as I found more and more instances of this.

Upon further review, there are many search results on Sears, across both architectural documentations as well an article from the archives from the Boys Scouts of America. According to the information provided by the Chattanooga BSA archive, Sears was integral in setting up the original Boy Scouts in Chattanooga. As more searches were returned, I found that Sears was integral in the establishment of homes and buildings all over Chattanooga, from schools, to government buildings, to homes.

This project is gaining speed with a very solid New Blue crew, with Corey Thompson at the helm guiding a tricky upstairs addition that includes a March based roof removal in Chattanooga, the rainy season.

Passing it On

New Blue Construction is an enthusiastic community partner of Greenspaces, a Chattanooga non-profit dedicated to sustainable building practices. So when Greenspaces asked us for help recently with their Build It Green internship program, our own Greg Prescott and Stuart Gaines stepped up to give their carpentry students some hands-on training in advanced framing techniques.

Participants in the Build It Green program get a 12-week paid internship that teaches them construction skills with a focus on energy-efficient building techniques. They also get mentoring from local construction companies and make connections with employers looking to hire. New Blue has now taught students in two different sessions since the program’s inception.

On this occasion, Greg and Stuart helped the students frame several walls for the IceBox Challenge, an international competition that asks contestants to build two small, well insulated buildings (one to local building code, and one to Passive House standards) that will be used to demonstrate to the public how smart building techniques can save energy and money https://iceboxchallenge.com.
